#FridayFictioneers – Laying in Wait

Gravel crunched underfoot sounding a rhythm as Casey ran the river trail.  The sun blazed down, turning what should have been a cool fall day into very late summer scorcher that pulled sweat from every pore of the lone trail runner.

Just a couple more miles to the bridge and cool shade by the water.

At the bridge Casey drank water from a reusable bottle and stretched the legs out before sitting on a pile of large, cool rocks to rest in the refreshingly moist river air.

Casey never saw who lay behind the rocks until it was too late.

#WeekendCoffeeShare – Writing More, Running Less

If  we were having coffee, we’d be at Starbucks.  That’s right, it’s a coffee share on location!  I’ve already secured a large, (they call that venti here, but if you say large, like I do, they understand) black coffee, and I can wait while you saunter up to the counter and gather in your heart’s desire.

Now that we’re all settled in, let’s talk. Continue reading “#WeekendCoffeeShare – Writing More, Running Less”

#WeekendCoffeeShare – Busy, Sleepy Weekend

cropped-cappuccino-on-table

If we were having coffee, we would have football on the tube and a nice fresh pot of coffee in the kitchen.  Won’t you help yourself to some?  It’s time to freshen mine up, so I can show you the way.  If coffee’s not your thing, we have tea, milk, and of course water.

Hopefully, you’ve had a good weekend.  We have, but it’s been a busy one starting Thursday at work.  It was a long day (and night) leaving too little sleep for Friday, but Friday came anyway.  After work Friday, we went to singing at church, then once home I was wide awake and though sleep would have been wiser, it was guitar time.  I’ve been trying to learn 3am by Matchbox Twenty, and this led to too little sleep for Saturday.  Saturday, I was up at 7am, to get the bikes ready for my daughter and I to go ride for a few hours before the wife and I went to a local college football game.  Home team lost.  Once home, I stayed up too late watching more football and slept a little too little for work on Sunday.  The hour rollback helped with that though. #WeekendCoffeeShare – Healing Up

cropped-cappuccino-on-table

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I was feeling better.  Not great, but better.  There’s coffee in the pot, so pour a cup and relax.  And great news, I don’t think I’m contagious at all this week!

The past week has been kinda sucky.  Last Saturday, my throat started hurting.  That stage passed by Monday, then came the sometimes stuffy, sometimes runny nose and sneezing, followed by the now present sinus drainage and coughing spells.  It was a good time!

If there is a bright side, it was all the rest, as I was sleeping more than should be allowed, and was still tired despite it all.  I can call this a bright side because, as you know, I’ve been a bit injured and taking it easy while healing is not my strong suit.

On the negative side, of which there are many, was my lack of production.  I’m referring to writing here.  November is on the way, and I started thinking of nanowrimo as it approached.  Never mind that I’ve never done it, I’ve got an idea to write on, and some of an outline done.  The fact that November is packed full of both work and personal obligations is making me reconsider, but hey, I may give it a go yet.  Even if I don’t finish, it’ll be a start on something, so we’ll see.  That outline should have fleshed out over this past week, but like I said, with the sick came the next to no production, so there’s that to deal with too.  If, and that’s a big if, I give nanowrimo a shot, it’ll be an uphill battle for sure.

How about you?  Are you giving nanowrimo a shot, and is it your first time or are you a nano veteran?  And if you are, how was your experience?

As for running, I’m going to give it a go next week.  It’s been 9 weeks now. so I’m hoping that will be enough.  The plan is to start out slow and short, and build speed and mileage in a slow controlled way.  Oh, and lots of foam rolling and massage to keep the calves from blowing up again.  That’s the plan anyway.

With all that said, I’ll let you go.  Hope you all have a great week!  Thanks for stopping by, see you all back here next week!

#WeekendCoffeeShare is an informal weekly link-up that serves as something of a mind-dump for the week.  If there are typos and what-not found here, I apologize, but mind-dump.  I don’t do a lot of editing here as I like that it is more a stream of consciousness type post, normally written while drinking coffee, listening to music, and reflecting on the week gone by.

It is hosted by Eclectic Alli. Check out her post for the week and maybe post a share of your own!

#WeekendCoffeeShare -Back to Writing, but Not Running.

If we were having coffee, I would apologize for the venue just before apologizing for standing you up on our coffee date last week.  We find ourselves in yet another hotel lobby this evening, but the coffee is pretty good.  (At least it’s hot.)  It was the best I could do.  All the coffee shops within walking distance closed early, except Dunkin of which I am not a fan.  So here we are.  Go ahead and grab a cup and I’ll refresh mine. #WeekendCoffeeShare – Hurricane Florence

cropped-cappuccino-on-table

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you how happy I am that the power is still on.  Yes, the wind is blowing and the rain is coming down, so let’s not count our chickens before they hatch or anything like that, but there is hope!  There is after all, a hurricane on the doorstep, but we have coffee (hot) and Jimmy Buffett playing in the background, so it’s best not to waste the time we have.

I have some nice Community Coffee brewing in the kitchen now since I finished off the first pot already.  It’s been that kind of morning.  I suppose its been that way for the past couple of days really.

Ah, there’s the coffee pot beep, letting me know that the new pot is done.  Shall we go fill our cups and then talk a spell?

This week has been a typical hurricane week.  There was the whole, maybe it’s gonna miss us after all, then the maybe not, the trips to the grocery to grab supplies, and the battening down of the proverbial hatches before the storm blows in.  Nothing new really, but always a hassle all the same.

You do what you can do before the storm hits, and then if you decide not to evacuate, you hope for the best.  I guess that hoping for the best holds true even if you do evacuate, but you know what I mean.  We are a little off the coast so we don’t normally evacuate.

Work shut down because of the storm, so I’ve been trying to use the time as wisely as possible, writing as much as I can while there is little else to do.  I’ve made a couple post so far, a #FridayFictioneers and Episode 8 in the Warriors serial, and did a bit more writing than that to boot.

If the power stays on, that should help the flow of words.  If it doesn’t, I’m prepared with a notebook, but other things may take priority if we’re in the dark.  Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen and if it does that it won’t last long.

On the fitness front, I had the best workout in a long while yesterday.  It started with 30 minutes on the stepper machine.  The calf is still too bummed to allow running, and the stepper is more work on the quads than the calves, so it is my only really cardio option for now.  After that was done, the weather was still nice, so I headed outside to do the crossfit workout Cindy which consist of AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 air squats in 20 minutes.  I managed 12 rounds.

I’m encouraged by yesterday’s workout and look forward to what’s next.  Running is still probably another three weeks away if I’m realistic and patient enough to allow myself to heal fully.  The calf still swells some, still gives some pain if stepped wrong, and is a constant source of concern, but it’s getting better day by day.  I’m massaging, foam rolling, and icing it as much as I can in an attempt to speed the healing process.  That I can do some form of cardio now should help pacify my urge to go pound out the miles, so that’s good.

Wow I’ve rambled on!  I should probably let you go, and fix myself another cup of this good hot coffee.  Keep us and all the others along the east coast in your thoughts and prayers.  Things aren’t as bad as we feared, but that doesn’t mean there’s not some rough stuff going on out there as a result of the storm.

If you are in the storm, stay safe!  I want to see you back next week for coffee, and we can talk about how we’re getting back to normal.  Hope everyone has the best week they can have, see you next week!

#WeekendCoffeeShare – College Football is Back!

cappuccino on table

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that College Football is back and I’m ready for it.  I’m up this morning, drinking my coffee and waiting for kickoff.  Won’t you have a cup?  There’s a pot of freshly brewed Peet’s Dark Roast just waiting to be poured.  We can also get you some tea or iced coffee, but that stuff in the pot is really good.  You should give it a shot!
