#FridayFictioneers – A Day for Poems

“How miserable is this weather,” Raul moaned.

“Oh no,” April said. “This is the perfect day to stay in and… I don’t know, write some poems.”

“Poems? No thanks. Never been able to figure them out.”

“That’s because you never really tried.”

Raul slumped down in the couch cushions. “Did too. The words just don’t fit together.”

“You’re overthinking. How’s this:

"The rain today,
Is here to stay,
Time to write,
Since I can"t go play...

“Ugh! Maybe you’re right. That’s no good”

“No, I liked it.” Raul sat up and stared into the rain. “Lemme try… Okay, here goes…”

I, like Raul, am not very good with poems. (as you can probably tell from my story) I used to try them out a bit more often than I do now, and lately I’ve been having thoughts of trying again. Be afraid! Be very afraid!

#FridayFictioneers is a weekly blog link up hosted by Rochelle over at RochelleWisoff.com. Thanks Rochelle! You should totally check it out and perhaps try your hand at your very own 100 word story!

You can read more 100 word stories and even submit your own here!

This story was made into a very short podcast! Click here to listen to the author talk.

  1. I feel ya, Russell… I don’t know what has come over me as I’ve been attempting poetry lately… some of it apparently is not too bad – even when I am unsure… So g’head! Let your creativity go!

  2. Two sites that you can use that are very useful to a poet — yes, you’re a poet, anyone who writes from the heart is — are rhymezone and shadowpoetry.com I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

    1. I’ll have to get over there and check those out Keith. You’re right about all the rules and stuff, but for the most part I’ve always just wrote what felt right. Probably doesn’t make for good poetry, but I never claimed to be any good! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. “More people write poetry than read it.” – George Carlin

I’ve never been a fan of poetry. I’ve more written more than my fair share. I like writing poetry more than I like reading it. I like the challenge of coming up with rhymes and patterns.

    1. I feel ya! I too don’t read too much of it. I’ve got a Robert Frost book (how cliche is that?) but I’ve never made it all the way through. There is something to the challenge of coming up with a good rhyme ever now and then though!
