If we were having coffee, I’d offer you a nice fresh brewed coffee or hot tea, and if hot’s not your thing right now cause it’s been hot even with the cool front we’re supposedly having, there’s some cold coffee as well. And if all else fails, we have water that can be served either iced or room temp. Please help yourself.
Once we’re all settled, hot or cold drinks in hand, we could chat a bit about the week gone by and enjoy a bit of music. I hope you don’t mind Jimmy Buffett, I’m in a bit of an island mood tonight, so the music fits. “License to Chill” is playing softly in the background as we start our talk.
First, I’d have to ask if that opening sentence is a bit long. If feels like maybe it is, but at the same time, it feels right to me. I find that there are times writing that the rules have got to be bent a little, but I’ve looked at the sentence and could be wrong but feel like it could be grammatically correct. Even if it is a little long for its own good. Maybe.
Speaking of writing, this week has been a somewhat productive one. One story rewrite is done, and three more original stories have begun. One is almost done with a first draft, one is just beginning, and the other may hit the proverbial trash heap. It’s not a ton of writing, but a little everyday, sometimes just on lunch break. It’s pretty cool what you can get done with just a little every week
There’s not much else going on over here. It was a fairly normal week of work, running, and writing. They say a cool front came through, and it has been a lot cooler in the mornings but the afternoon’s were still in the 90’s. That’s when I run, not being a morning person and all. Sometimes I can hate on myself for that, lol.
Guess I’ll let you go ahead and start your weekend. Hope you have a great one! I’ll see you next week if not before.
#WeekendCoffeeShare is an informal weekly link-up hosted now by Eclectic Alli that serves as something of a mind-dump for the week. If there are typos and what-not found here, I apologize, but mind-dump. I don’t do a lot of editing here as I like that it is more a stream of consciousness type post, normally written while drinking coffee, listening to music, and reflecting on the week gone by.
If you would like, you can write and post your own Weekend Coffee Share here with the rest of us coffee and tea drinking fiends!
When writing rules definitely need to be bent at times. It is that which often makes a piece of writing unique.

It has been another hot one here, too. The heat turns me towards the nocturnal, doing my work at night when it’s a tad cooler….also works well with my chronic insomnia. This morning’s iced Almond Milk was a pleasant reprieve before I headed out to do errands while hubs works overtime. Glad to hear you’re having a good week, and hope next week is even better!

Thanks! I often prefer the nocturnal, but my work schedule puts me to bed earlier than I’d like most nights. When I do burn that midnight oil, I lean heavy on the coffee the next day!

I think if I checked my writing for rules….I’d never write anything!

Hahahahaha! Yeah, you’re right. You can’t get too tied up with all those rules. They stifle the creativity, I think.

Hi Russell.
I’m in the same camp as you on “some times we need to bend the rules of writing”.
Depending on the voice I’m looking for or the target readers, I either comply with or bend them to just past the break point. If I’m using my common storytelling voice, I find that a rowdy tone is much easier and fun to reach if I bend several rules and I like the results.
If I’m reading essays for fun, I don’t want a lecture. I prefer the hear the writer as if s/he is talking to me with all the side thoughts and mid sentence burps added right in.
I appreciate any writer who finds a cozy writing stage and bends the rules to better entertain.
I hope you’re having a great week.

Thanks Gary! I’m with you. I like an author that has their own voice, even if that voice falls a bit outside of the rules. To me, it sounds more authentic and makes for a better reading experience.
Have a great week!
